Sheilah O’Connor interviewed before play starts

On Aug 20, 2023 Shakespeare in the Ruff invited Society member Sheilah O’Connor to be interviewed before their play, Richard Three, started. Before a small but appreciative audience, she was asked about the Society, why Shakespeare portrayed Richard as he did, and whether she can still enjoy watching Shakespeare’s play. Photo from behind of audience members sitting in a park, facing 2 people talking on the makeshift stage.

We are grateful for the opportunity to let audiences know that Shakespeare did not write history!

Tracy Bryce on Ruff Radio

Shakespeare in the Ruff is a Toronto based professional theatre company that “breathes life and magic into Shakespeare’s works for Toronto’s diverse and contemporary audience” in Withrow Park at the end of each summer. This year they take on Richard III in a new play called Richard Three. Society members have participated in their bookclub (especially when The Daughter of Time was the book under discussion!) and just recently, our Chair, Tracy Bryce was invited onto their podcast to discuss Richard III and the Society. Take a listen.

Ricardians in PEI

For two weeks in early May, the City Cinema in Charlottetown, PEI showed the movie The Lost King. This was a result of member Christine Hurlbut approaching the movie theatre and suggesting it as an excellent tie-in with the Coronation.

But Chris didn’t stop there. She and fellow Ricardian Clement Carelse came to the theatre every night to hand out information about the Richard III Society of Canada to interested movie-goers. This in turn attracted the attention of the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) who published an interview with Christine.

Here’s hoping we see some of those interested people as new members!

The Lost King opens in Canada March 24, 2023

Philippa Langley’s story made history. And now it is a major motion picture. We’ve been waiting since it premiered at TIFF in September, and at last, it is opening in theatres across Canada on March 24th. Starring Sally Hawkins as Philippa, Steve Coogan as her supportive ex-husband and Harry Lloyd as King Richard III. The Lost King – the true story of an amateur historian who revealed a royal lie.
